15 & 16 March 2010, Monday & Tuesday
As I presented during the Public Speaking Techniques session the previous week, I opted out of being interviewed individually by the panelists on these two days. The reason being was that there were about 46 people in the to-be-interviewed list. The panelists had to interview all 46 of them in 2 days, and since we started the class at about 11am the first day, there was not much time really to accommodate the 20 of us who presented before.
Those two days were a bit boring for me, but terrifying also, because I kept hearing that one of the panelists was a fierce guy who kept shouting at the interviewee. I was glad I opted out of being interviewed in the first place.
Tea time!
18 March 2010, Wednesday
This was such an interesting day, for we got to meet the famous Cikgu Fatimah Abu Bakar from Akademi Fantasia! We had a session with her on Body Language for Presentation.
I was among the 10 new trainees to join the program on Monday, March 8.
8 March 2010, Monday
I learned how to conduct and plan an effective meeting. The trainers, Miss Iris and Miss Suzi was a wonderful pair, for they kept us entertained (read: awake) throughout the day, while teaching us all the important details of a meeting, and that meetings could be fun and effective, if planned perfectly.
9 March 2010, Tuesday
I also learned how to construct an effective cover letter and resume the correct way. The trainers, Miss Farah and Miss Liza were two ladies who I believe, know what they are doing. The way they explained everything was very easy to understand, and easy to follow. We were grouped together in 7 or 8, and we had to discuss many things, among which include how to make up an effective resume, and how to leave a very good impression with our potential employers with a good, customized cover letter. It was a very enlightening session. I was glad I learned many things from the session, among which was that having a 4-page resume is not necessarily a very wise idea.
10 March 2010, Wednesday
We also had a session with those two very capable trainers, focusing on Business Writing. I learned that there are 2 general ways to write a business letter that are followed by the working people daily. A business letter has to be concise, clear and conversational. The trainers, Miss Tara and Miss Sofia were very fun and funky! They managed to keep us interested the whole day with their individual dynamic personality.
11 March 2010, Thursday We got ourselves scared silly with Public Speaking Techniques during the second half of the day. Mr Farizal was the trainer, and he carries himself very well, and he speaks VERY WELL. I wonder if I can ever be as good as him, or at least, half as good. Such a long way to go, but he did say that becoming a good speaker does not happen over night. Or two weeks. Or two months. It takes a loooong time to perfect your skills, but it is possible. He did comment that I had a 'very good voice projection' after my group acted out a press conference on 'Awareness of Biodiversity in Malaysia'. That was a good motivation to improve myself!
12 March 2010, Friday
We had a special session with Professor Patricia Green from Babson College, US in the morning. She covered everything under the sun that has anything to do with being an entrepreneur. Well, the basic ones were covered, anyway. A very wonderful speaker, she knows her stuffs. Of course, she has been teaching entrepreneurship to people from all walks of life for well over 20 years! She shared a very, very awesome video with the class that was made by one of her students that went to start an organization that empowers entrepreneurs, Grasshoppper (catchy name, don't you think?). Watch the following video, and say you do not feel the least bit, well, inspired, to do something :)
In the afternoon, we had another session with Miss Liza and Miss Farah, where we discussed on advanced report writing. It was a good session.
Well, that about wraps up my first week with Communication Module with BeST. Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed typing it out! :)
When Shera asked me to forward my resume to her on March 5 (Friday), I immediately did so. I did not do much thinking, I just attached my resume in the e-mail and clicked 'Send'. Mere minutes later, I found out that I was accepted into the program and that I was supposed to register on March 8 (Monday). A very sudden thing. My reasoning for not stopping to think it through, it's not like I have anything much to do at home. For the past few months prior to enrolling with BeST program, I was pretty much a couch potato, apart from managing my online blogshop (read: online shopping via weblogs) that was recently launched at the end of January this year. Business was good, but not to the extent that I was constantly in front of the computer replying e-mails from buyers.
So when Monday came, I got up early and grudgingly joined the morning rush hour. The STAR LRT coach from Ampang was packed to the max but there's nothing I could do except to try to survive the crowd. Getting off the STAR LRT train at Masjid Jamek to switch to Putra LRT line was a breeze. It's the loooong walk in the tunnel towards Putra LRT station that was quite a challenge, especially if you are wearing brand new pumps with non-rubberized soles, trying not to skid while walking. However, the thought of the fact that Dang Wangi Putra LRT station is only one stop away from Masjid Jamek kept me walking.
Once I reached Dang Wangi, Shera was already waiting for me to walk with me to CapSquare. I am embarassed to say that I have never walked around Kuala Lumpur on foot before, even though I have lived in KL all my life.It took us only 7 minutes or so to step our foot in CapSquare, where 2 of them were spent waiting for the traffic light to turn to 'LINTAS', so that we could get to the other side of the road where CapSquare is located at.
When I was walking alongside the CapSquare building, my first thought was, "Why is this place so empty?" Yes it's a given that it's an early Monday morning, but shouldn't a university compound be filled with students and lecturers alike? That morning, I did not anyone else apart from myself, Shera and the security guard at the lobby. Not even a janitor in sight! The atmosphere was very calm and activity-less, which I was not accustomed to, as where I studied before (IIUM Kuantan), there were a LOT of people around at any one time. I was extremely puzzled with this, but I decided to just go with it.
Once I have registered myself into the program with Encik Muzaffar, one of the coordinators, I entered my first BeST class.
What happened during the rest of the week? Well, that's a story for the next post!
